Mass Animal Sacrifice

Greetings and welcome. A quick post this morning. I have seen much to-do about the mass animal sacrifice in Nepal. Americans are "shocked" and "outraged" that such primitive and savage rituals still exist in our so-called modern age. I'm sure you heard about it. You may have even been one of the people who were "outraged" by it. 200,000 animals had their heads chopped off by machete and sword wielding men, women, and yes even children. Imagine the horror of a child cutting the head off of an animal. The animals sacrificed included chickens, goats, buffaloes and pigeons. This festival is held every five years to honour Gadhimai, a Hindu goddess of power. It is a local custom for a specific region in Nepal, and is a two day event.
Okay, now for Joel the K's take on this situation. First off, I will try my best not to become enraged at Americans self righteous attitude. It makes me sick. Allow me to put this ritual sacrifice into perspective. The headlines screamed about 200,000 animals being sacrificed. Okay, but did they mention that over 200,000 people participated? That is one animal per person or less. The headlines keyed in on the word "sacrifice". Did they mention that every animal killed was taken home to be eaten in a sacred and respectful way? Did they mention that? Did the newspapers tell you that per capita income in this region is $25 per month? And that this ceremony has been celebrated for hundreds of years? Did they mention that some families travel 60 miles or more by ox-cart in order to pray and partake in this religious ceremony? And that it is really a feast and not just a sacrifice? No, I did not think they would tell you that. +++ 200,000 animals. how does that match up to the number of turkeys slaughtered last week for "Thanksgiving"? Care to take a guess? 300 MILLION !! Let that number sink in to your head for a moment. 300 million. Yet Americans will not hesitate to point their finger at some villagers in Nepal because they offer their turkey or other animal up to God before they kill it and eat it. Oh yes, saintly westerners don't get blood on their hands. They just go down to Wal-mark and buy an animal which was slaughtered in a mass death factory, in a cold, ruthless, scientific manner, pumped full of hormones and anti-biotics so that the cramped and inhumane conditions will not kill the turkeys first. I guarantee you that the Nepalese people have a greater respect for life than 99% of westerners do. At least they have the balls to chop the head off themselves. Their kids respect life because they actually TAKE life. But before they take the animal's life, they offer it to God. Westerners don't even know where their food comes from. And most of them wouldn't think of offering it up to God before they eat it. So don't go getting all self righteous pointing your finger at Nepal Hindus. What they did was beautiful compared to what Americans did last week. We killed 300 million turkeys. Millions of cows. Millions of pigs. And our tax dollars were paying for more than just animals to be killed that day. Yes I am talking about people. Human beings. My tolerance for uneducated ignorance is nearing the zero point. I must pray for forgiveness. +++ Did they kill 200,000 animals in Nepal to honor Divine Mother? Yes. Yes they did. But it was a drop in the ocean compared to the blood that was spilled in the USA that day. And every day. Burger King, McDonalds, White Castle, Wendy's, KFC. Good gawd. +++ Let he who is without sin cast the first stone.

Hey Joel,
You know the media is paid to demonize other cultures - to divide and conquer our minds/bodies by having everyone fear/hate one another. It's called ETHNOCENTRISM when we should be more Cultural Relativists - open minds w/out judgment when viewing the customs of other cultures.

That is the general attitude I get when people find out that I am a hunter. They say, O how could you Kill a innocent animal. I always ask first O are you a vegetarian? And almost always they answer no. I then say... so you rely on other people doing the killing for you, and Wow, did you think about that when you had that .99 cent chicken sandwich?
Some say...well they are "just chickens" Sometimes I poke a little further and ask if they know how that chicken was raised and in what kind of conditions. At this point they know to just shut up, but hopefully It plants a seed in them as to what is in humane....But one thing is for sure I have found out.... You can't fix stupid, carry on.

In line with DustyDave's comment...
Everyone should rent the film FOOD, Inc. It goes over the travesty of the Food Industry and its treatment of the animals and its workers. It also goes over GM food and MONOPOLY of our food.(2nd post anonymous)

Joel the K about an hour away (area of Don Juan, Carlos Costanates) from my house are many indigenous Indian colonies (mostly Yaqui) that eat only home grown organic crops & during their religious festivals 5-8000 in attendance & offer prayers of gratitude to the animals that are sacrificed & eaten during those occasions. They have told me to do otherwise is barbaric. They have many that can walk you threw the desert & explain the medicinal properties of their plants & how to use them; all without Obamacare.

Gary,
I have read all of Castaneda's accounts of his journey's with the Yaqi man of power, Don Juan Matus. How I would love to travel in those regions and learn the lore firsthand from the children of the Sun themselves. Thank you for your comment and visit.
